THE UNIVERSITY OF TULSA
International Business and Entrepreneurship Institute
Program Overview
The International Business and Entrepreneurship Institute (IBEI) was established in May, 2007 to become a gateway to the “real world” of international and entrepreneurial ventures for graduate and undergraduate students at The University of Tulsa. The IBEI will promote interdisciplinary research in the areas of international business and entrepreneurship. Faculty and students from the four TU colleges and members of the Tulsa community will be encouraged to participate in IBEI activities.
Organization
The International Business and Entrepreneurship Institute is located in the Collins College of Business. It currently includes a faculty member from each of the three business departments. Associate Dean and Professor of Finance Mark Collins serves as director of the IBEI; Bovaird Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies Larry Wofford serves as co-director; entrepreneurial program coordinator Claire Cornell serves as assistant director and Chapman Professor of Accounting Karen Cravens will join the IBEI as a faculty associate. The IBEI will be the tenure home of Michael Troilo, Assistant Professor of International Business. These members, plus any additional faculty members appointed to the IBEI in the future, will comprise the resident faculty of the IBEI.
Outreach
The IBEI is the co-administrative home of the Family-Owned Business Institute and the Tulsa University Innovation Institute (TUI2). The IBEI supplements traditional classroom teaching experiences through a variety of practical experiences including internships, international experiences, seminars, workshops, mentoring programs, consulting engagements with companies, and interaction with corporate speakers from global and domestic enterprises, both in and out of class. The institute works closely with the Center for Professional Development to offer learning opportunities that will help global entrepreneurial businesses progress to the next level. IBEI also partners with the Tulsa Global Alliance, the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, and similar organizations, to facilitate small and medium size enterprises in their efforts to promote export sales and international business activity.
Curriculum
Undergraduate Program (BSBA in Management, with a concentration in entrepreneurship and family business management)
There are typically ten to fifteen undergraduate students per year who design their undergraduate business degree to meet the qualifications for an entrepreneurship and family business management concentration. In additional to the traditional business curriculum, students must take MGT 4023: Negotiation and Management; MGT 4033: Family Business Management; MGT 4203: Venture Start-Up Evaluation; and MGT 4053: Entrepreneurship. Undergraduates can receive credit for participation in the Governor’s Cup Business Plan Competition (MGT 4993) and they can join the TU SIFE team which participates in entrepreneurial activities.
Graduate Program (MBA)
Graduate students currently cannot specialize in entrepreneurship. They can take MGT 7033: Entrepreneurship; MGT 7933: Governor’s Cup Business Plan Competition; iMBA 7413: Innovation and Corporate Entrepreneurship and they can participate in the TU SIFE team entrepreneurial activities.
One of the immediate objectives of the IBEI will be to strengthen the entrepreneurship offers at both the undergraduate and graduate levels with the goal of offering an undergraduate major in entrepreneurship.
